How to Spot Urine

An unexpected fluorescent substance is cat urine and it was recently discovered how effective it can be to use UV-light to illuminate the areas affected by cat urine.

Many UV lights emit a wavelength of 390 nm to 400 nm, for pets urine, however, it is best to use a light in the 365 nm to 385 nm range.

It's best to carry out the detective work when the urine is dry. If there is any humidity in the room that is causing the affected surface to absorb moisture, you will likely to have an empty result.

The UV light should be used in dark conditions, such as evenings or without lights on. Brightness may make the UV light produce no glow at all.

If there is cat urine in the area, it will fluoresce as a pale yellow color with a possible faint light green tinge. The stain may look like a spot, pool-shaped puddle, drips, or a splatter, and may be on the floor, furniture, or walls. Keep in mind that if you see any bright white glows, those are caused by other substances such as carpet cleaners, drink spills, and wallpaper glue.

Mark the stain - Place some sort of marker (e.g., tape, pencil, chalk) around the stains. This will help you easily locate the stained areas once you turn the lights on.

At a crime scene, fast and accurate detection of possible traces is of vital importance. Many biological fluids are fluorescent in nature. When such traces are illuminated with light of the right wavelength they fluoresce and are detectable to the investigator.

The degree to which various substances become visible when using different filters depends on the state of the substance and the surface on which the substance exists. Deciding what light source to use to achieve the best result in finding traces at the crime scene is an art. It takes years of experience to learn what light to use depending on the occasion - it’s not an exact science.

Depth-curing with UV radiation, at wavelengths between 300-400 nm give the best results. The method gives very short curing times to handling strength as well as low heat generation and energy consumption.
